HYPNOTHERAPY
Hypnotherapy is nothing new nor is it
some mystical force. Entering into a state of hypnosis is as
natural as eating or sleeping. In fact we all go into an hypnotic
state several times a day for example, when we watch T.V., or
become engrossed in a good book , or when we are daydreaming.
Hypnosis allows us to access the
subconscious mind , the storehouse of memory about every person,
place, or experience we have had in this lifetime. It is very
powerful and contains a massive amount of information. It is
conditioned by past events and it is in the subconscious that many
present problems have their origin, such as phobias and illnesses.
The subconscious can be accessed when we
are relaxed and it is in this way that hypnosis can be so
beneficial. It takes you into a state of relaxation where
beneficial suggestions can enter into the subconscious. During
hypnosis you are aware of what is happening and are able to answer
questions. This means that we are able to pinpoint a particular
incident which can be affecting you now and causing your current
problem.
Listed are a few of the problems
which hypnotherapy has helped:
Fears & Phobias Nervousness
& Anxiety
Habits
Self-Confidence
Weight Control
Smoking Cessation
Pain Management
Self Esteem
Improved Healing
Sports Performance Dream
Analysis Past
Life Regression
More and more people are now realizing
the very positive effects that hypnosis can have on them,
alleviating problems which have given years of suffering.
Fear Elimination Therapy
Most of us have one fear or another,
spiders, dogs, cats, water, flying to name only a few. These fears
can severely disrupt our lives and cause untold misery for the
sufferer and their families.
FET is a unique approach to
resolving fearful responses to life's situations and was developed
by renowned hypnotherapist Robert Shields.
It is based on two factors: NLP eye scan
patterns, and established memory pattern. We must firstly break
the habit (memory pattern) and then convince the subconscious
mind that the feelings attached to the original event are not
now as traumatic. A minimum of three sessions is advised.

Hypnosis Myths
There are a number of myths surrounding
hypnosis many of which have originated from the way hypnosis is
portrayed in films, books and T.V. We highlight the main ones
here.
Myth - Hypnosis is like sleep.
Fact - Hypnosis is not sleep but
altered consciousness. It is actually the opposite of sleep. To
quote Dr Herbert Spiegel, a clinical professor of Psychiatry,
"on a scale of human awareness, hypnosis is at the opposite
end from coma, with ordinary consciousness in the middle. Trance
is an intensely focused and concentrated ribbon of attention that
screens out external stimuli." Scientists have also tested
the brain wave patterns of hypnotised subjects using EEG machines
which record brain wave patterns. They found that under hypnosis
the brain emits Alpha brain waves denoting a state of mental
alertness but physical relaxation. Alpha is the most pleasant
state to be in. It is in this state that tension is released,
batteries are re-charged, ravages of stress are repaired and a
sense of well-being is experienced. In sleep the brain emits delta
waves.
Myth - The Hypnotist can control the persons
mind.
Fact - I think this myth comes
from watching to many Dracula films and from the antics seen in
stage hypnosis! To be successful hypnosis needs the cooperation of
the patient. If you are unwilling to cooperate then you will not
be hypnotised. The therapist acts as a guide, taking the patient
into a pleasant state of relaxation where concentration is
intensified and focused allowing information to be retrieved and
positive goals to be achieved. The person chooses to enter
the state of hypnosis. During a hypnotherapy session you are able
to hear everything that is said to you and so can dismiss any
suggestion which is not beneficial. The therapist is there to help
you.
Myth - you can be forced to do something
you don't want to do.
As will be evident from the last answer,
you choose to go along with the hypnosis and you can choose not to
go along with suggestions you don't like. No one will act against
their will as a result of hypnosis despite what you may see on T.V.
If a suggestion was made which offended you or was against your
moral code, you would either ignore the suggestion or come out of
the trance. If it was possible to control the mind through hypnosis
then every criminal in the world would be learning how to do it
and police forces would be using it to extract information from
suspects - this is clearly not happening. The only way your mind
can be controlled is through brainwashing techniques and that has
nothing to do with hypnotherapy.
Myth - Suggestibility to hypnosis
indicates gullibility and low intelligence.
Fact - Hypnosis requires a
reasonable level of intelligence. The ability to concentrate and
to choose to enter into hypnosis needs a reasonably good level of
intelligence. It is not possible to hypnotise mentally retarded
individuals and it is difficult with people of low intelligence.
Gullibility does not also make a good hypnotic subject.
Myth - You may be left in hypnosis
forever.
Fact - If something happened to
the therapist which incapacitated them in any way and they were
unable to complete the session, you would not remain forever in
hypnosis. Studies have shown quite clearly that you would most
probably fall into a natural sleep and wake naturally. You do not
need the hypnotist to fetch you out of trance, in fact you don't
need anyone as you can do it yourself.
