When my Mother ran out of the house shrieking I
did not realise then the impact it would have on my future
career.
Yes my mother was terrified, really terrifiedof ...
Frogs and in my childlike innocence I had brought her one to
see (that was the first and last time). I later discovered that
she also hated snakes.
The Kay household was largely dominated by Sport. My Father had
been an excellent athlete and footballer and my older brother was
also although he would go on to be a very talented cricketer.
I loved sport and still do, but of course one of
the downsides of sports is getting injured. One year when we were
living near Blackpool, I visited an Osteopath who had been
recommended to me. During the course of the treatments, we talked
about training in physical therapy. Turned out that he was one of
the lecturers at a college nearby.
I popped over and picked up a prospectus from the Northern
Institute of Massage. As I read through it was if the words on the
page sang to me...this was what i wanted to pursue as a career.
So without further ado i signed up for their
Remedial Massage course. Little did I know that I would be
spending so many hours with my nose in books. As you can imagine I
had lots of willing volunteers to practice on, it was also a time
when my mother had developed arthritis in her hands so she was
always first in line! I also had a friend from my karate club who
had also decided to take the course, so we were able to practice
on each other and quiz each other on anatomy and physiology.
The first part of the course was body massage, and
when I had completed that I approached the owner of the health
club where I worked out to see if i could do a few hours a
week there which he said yes to.
In 1991 I completed the Remedial Massage course
and opened my first clinic up in the front room of the house and
continued to work from there for the next three years.
Like most people, I have wanted to travel and see the world and an
opportunity came up to work as a massage therapist as part of a
team on a cruise line ship. I worked on the ships for almost two
years and it was while there that my interest was stirred in the
direction of mind therapies.
A hypnotist had come to do a few shows and one day
he showed up for a massage treatment so naturally we got talking.
I found it quite fascinating and was fortunate that he was willing
to share some of his techniques and experiences with me and I
experienced a hypnotic trance for the first time.
After I returned to dry land I set up a physical
therapy clinic in Holywell in North Wales and continued my
education in this field. Something though was nagging away at
me...
Why was it some people should have been getting
better but weren't? I realised there was a psychological
element to it but I had no idea just how big a part it was
playing.
In 2003 I started a hypnotherapy course with Robert Shields, a
very experienced and talented hypnotherapist. It was fascinating
and had me enthralled from the start. I remembered some of the
techniques the guy on the ship had shown me and i was away gaining
my diploma in 2004.
Since then I have been thoroughly absorbed in this
fascinating subject and have learned from some great teachers such
as Gil Boyne, Tom Silver and the controversial but brilliant
Dr Jonathan Royle
Phd. Then something else started to appear in a lot of
hypnotherapy discussion groups, it was just three letters...EFT
Well of course I had to investigate, I downloaded
the free manual that is available and read it from cover to cover.
I'd seen enough I wanted to know more about this so I sent to
America for a DVD training set and locked myself away for a few
weeks studying them! this was truly amazing and I could see
how it would improve what i was already doing.
Since then I have spent hundreds of hours studying
this remarkable system of healing, its applications I believe are
truly limitless.
And my mother... we cured her fear of frogs and
snakes in just one session -fantastic.
